For Peter Drucker, leadership is about communicating with people , uniting them behind a shared mission and values, and mobilizing energies toward accomplishing the mission or purpose of an organization. That means that leadership is a means to an end --the mission it serves is the end. Leadership requires followership.

In being true to my contrarian self, and with rare exception (Peter Drucker, Adam Smith, etc.), Level Five Leaders : Jim refers to a hierarchical matrix of leadership that describes 5 different types of leaders, and suggests that only with rare exception can anything other than a Level 5 leader take a company from good to great.

Second, he identifies four types or leadership metaphors : the hedgehog, the fox, the eagle, and the ostrich.
