Like many leaders, as a young coach I focused primarily on strategy and the requisite skills that I thought were important – but neglected the interpersonal dynamics that would have had a tremendous positive impact on our team success. As Peter Drucker says, “Culture eats strategy for breakfast.”.

Here are my thoughts to them as they begin their life at work they love: To my daughters Dear Briana and Kelly, I am so proud of you as you end your formal education and begin on an education of another kind; one that will last the rest of your life. She is a talented creative writer and poet who is embarking on her Ph.D.

Being systematic is vital to current success. Being open to new possibilities might be responsible for the spark of an idea that will drive future success. I feel that the majority of good leaders can only be developed, in a sense that no specific training, educational degree or position can define their development.

It’s an example of what Abraham Maslow called unconscious competence and it’s the last of four stages of learning he based on different levels of competence. That’s pretty much where Brad is in his driver education right now although he’s doing a great job of managing his discomfort. In those checked items lies the gold.

I do not know any actual examples. It would be an interesting study to have leaders wear a heart rate monitor for a day.
