Ford did not think up the combustion engine or automobiles, Edison did not think up incandescent light bulbs, Larry Page did not think up search engines. Instead, longevity is based on entrepreneurial thinking and innovation – in exploring ways to adapt corporate and business strategies in response to market, technological, and social and cultural change. On reflection, though, I find that the evidence does not support competitive advantage as a path to longevity.

Most people tend to look at acquisitions from a rather myopic and traditional M&A perspective: making a strategic or synergistic purchase of an operating entity on an accretive basis. However restricting your view of acquisitions to operating companies is like playing a football game with only one play in your playbook.

There’s also potential to improve existing jobs by providing lower-skill workers with tools and encouragement, thereby improving customer service, reducing turnover, and promoting innovation and engagement.
