Steve Jobs landed the number one spot in our ranking of the best CEOs in the world, published in HBR in January 2010. Unlike most rankings, it was based on a systematic analysis of stock-market performance among nearly 2,000 CEOs of the world’s largest companies. It wasn’t based on perceived popularity or some other subjective measure, but simply on the basis of how well the stock had performed during the CEOs’ tenure — from the first day on the job to the last (or if they were still in office, until September 30, 2009, our last date of observation).
