The other day I was cleaning out some of my old files and I came across an article I had copied from the Wall Street Journal back on October 21st, 1993, written by Peter Drucker. Drucker got it wrong. Drucker famously wrote that “ the purpose of business is to create and keep a customer. ” I’m as much a fan of Drucker’s as any management scholar, but I have to part ways with him here. Sure profits are a part of any business, but it’s typically not the reason entrepreneurs start a business.
