Have you noticed that with great responsibility, there tends to be great power? However, power, though inherent, can be turned two directions. Here is a basic problem – when you fuel something with power, it relies on that power to keep going. If it is in the United States, it was built on the paradigm of power.

They mentioned the whole idea of church leadership being about power…and the absence thereof for women in particular. What if we are trying to create communities of power instead of influence? As I was driving today, that sentence suddenly hit me. A long time ago, I thought that the church needed a change in models.

Why we yearn for power

I was contemplating the reason that power is so tempting. By power being tempting, I don’t actually mean the power that destroys, as in Hitler. I’m talking about the gentle turn in focus that can easily happen in ministry leadership. So, it seems that we are drawn to power, even when we start out fighting it.

We have a power and permissions model for work, and a power and permissions model for church. Do you expect them to accept you only on the basis of your abilities?
