The Path-Goal Theory of Leadership was developed in the mid-’70s by Martin G. House and draws heavily on an earlier theory by Victor Vroom called the Expectancy Theory. If you’re looking for a leadership theory with a broad base of research behind it, then Transformational Leadership Theory is probably your best bet.
