Workers became cogs in the machine; shut off their minds, shut their mouths, and did what engineers and managers told them to do. Costs were soaring and projected to get worse.

These were coupled with Frederick Wilson Taylor’s popular scientific management theory that focused on financial compensation and the concept that workers’ motivation resulted from payment for volume-based repetitive task work. The consequence is a more flexible and fluid concept of leadership.
