While the tips still apply to written communication, I haven’t written specifically about how to apply the model in emails and letters. I might expand this thought further in later posts, but, for now, I thought I would share a quick tip to improve the odds that people actually read and take action on your written correspondence.

When she was about 2 or 3, I built Krystal a toy box with her name on the front in hand-cut wood letters. I won’t go into the details of our thirty year friendship other than to say that my friend’s niece was important to me. I sat in a chair and held her for the better part of 3 or 4 hours even though I had homework to do.

As I sat in her American Literature class listening to a discussion of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s classic The Scarlet Letter , her teacher questioned the virtue of tolerance. On Shadow Day, parents attend classes with their children. In his brief comment on the topic, he referenced a talk he once heard by Elie Wiesel. Never show again.
