Unsuccessful coaching engagements can mean wasted time and expense for the person being coached and the organization, and for these reasons everyone wants to avoid them! The HR person said, “We want you to coach Dr. X.”

It has helped me focus and become pretty good at what I do, which I can describe in two words: behavioral coaching. Today, most people who call themselves executive coaches are coaches in the area of leadership behavior. There are a few– and I would like to underline, very few– strategic coaches.

Q: When does leadership coaching work? A: In my work as an executive coach, I only get paid if my clients achieve a positive, lasting change in behavior - not as judged by themselves, but as determined by their key stakeholders. This has made me think a lot about when coaching works - and when it doesn't.
