Even worse is when those sound-bites are used in an attempt to make statements which embolden a corporate position that doesn’t really even exist to begin with. Rarely do I speak with an executive who hasn’t drunk the talent messaging Kool-Aid. then you are likely just paying lip service to the value of talent.

Why I realize we cannot all be entrepreneurial in the sense that we can’t all start our own companies, I believe we can all be entrepreneurial in terms of how we approach our careers. I didn’t start out in life thinking I would become an executive coach. This is critical! Don’t worry too much that you might take the wrong road.

The reason this is such a great question is that I’ve witnessed far too many executives confuse vision and mission in terms of both definition and application. It’s important to understand that vision statements are design oriented, while mission statements are execution oriented.

As someone who has spent their career going inside organizations that do customer service extremely well – from Nordstrom, USAA, Southwest Airlines, Zappos , L.L. Southwest Airlines creatively spells words such as “luv” in its mission statement and internal documents. Support for customer-focused innovation.
