Over the course of may career, I only had one manager who was a leader. He made such an impact and influenced my leadership style. James Collins and a research team conducted a five year historical analysis of companies that over time had made a sustained transition from good to great. Succession planning was a problem.

He took Jim Collins’ Venn diagram for the Hedgehog Concept for business success and applied it to an individual’s career search. Collins’ diagram has three circles: “What are you deeply passionate about?” The end result is a very specific and individually tailored career goal.

In fact, Jim Collins – best selling business book ever, “Good to Great” – on page 30 in that book, he says, “you know we debated calling these great leaders ‘servant leaders’”, he said. Honesty, bad idea.
