Reward talent, innovation, loyalty, attitude, creativity, work ethic, contribution, and leadership ability…not tenure. often evoke feelings of hatred at the mere mention of their name.

While the aforementioned qualities are certainly admirable, they are only valuable if they influence or create action. This blog was recently nominated for Kevin Eikenberry’s Best Leadership Blogs of 2010 , and I noticed recently that Kevin was taking heat from the gender police for having only one woman on the list of nominees. A sense of entitlement is not a substitute for work ethic and a desire to achieve.

For long-term relationship-building, be sure that your values and those of your clients mesh. Competition without relationships turns products and services turn into commodities. No one is equally expert at both.

In further pondering this dichotomy an interesting thought came to mind – If I could genetically engineer the perfect leadership gene what qualities and characteristics would constitute the architecture of leadership DNA?
