Ethical dilemmas are at least as hard to resolve as engineering problems, and at least as urgent, particularly in our complex and fast-moving world. In a lean economy, many sales and business development people feel obligated to discount their prices; at least, the discussion of price and where it fits in the sales strategy becomes more important than ever.

Great leaders encourage leadership development by openly developing themselves. In fact, organizations that do the best job of cranking out leaders tend to have CEOs like Steve Sanger who are directly and actively involved in leadership development. Leading by example can mean a lot more than leading by public-relations hype.

In the public arena, we vote for our leaders (this may provide the most obvious connection to our responsibility for bad leadership): In this case, we might ignore bad past behavior before we cast our vote. We may be snowed by the public relations machine that “markets” a poor leader. We tolerate them.
