Furthermore, last time I checked a CEO can always be removed for lack of performance, or moral and ethical indiscretions, so what purpose do CEO term limits serve other than to disincentivize the CEO? They must be relevant, meaningful, in alignment with cultural values, and tied to the right set of metrics. I personally dont feel bonuses work to promote a good work ethic. My experience is that bonuses are absolutely effective given this caveat: they must be structured and implemented properly. An idividual either has it or doesnt.

Reward talent, innovation, loyalty, attitude, creativity, work ethic, contribution, and leadership ability…not tenure. I want metrics that mirror experience. often evoke feelings of hatred at the mere mention of their name. The bottom line is this…as an employer you need to possess an extreme bias toward performance.

They will not compromise their value system and personal ethics for temporary gain. I think many in leadership get to choose the metric they use to measure, and they seem to always choose the one that makes them look good. That said, your observation about the need to measure the "right" metrics is an astute one.
