One of Dr. Deming’s 7 deadly diseases is: Emphasis on short-term profits: short-term thinking. It is easy to focus on short term goals and use a somewhat simple short term figure to measure success. The games played to manipulate earnings are enormous (and no surprise to those who understand likely outcome of pressure to meet short term goals is a desire to manipulate the figure rather than improve underlying results ).
