How to recognize and sustain the distinction between who I am, as a person, and my results, reputation, responsibilities, roles, and resources. When I confuse these transitory aspects of life with my core self I am more likely to become angry, defensive, and narrow-minded. Perceived threats to the 5 Rs can be confused with actual existential dangers and push me into survival mode, a high-stress, low creativity way of being that drains away energy and joy. We applied these insights to recent challenges as diverse as sales presentations and helping our children with homework. Everyone on the call saw ways to spot the triggers that send us into protective mode and committed to practices that would help us get back on track with our ultimate goals and values.
